Italy expects to advance bill recognizing family caregivers

Italy’s disability minister, Alessandra Locatelli, says a bill to recognize family caregivers is nearing a vote in the Chamber of Deputies.

The government has already approved the bill, and it is now moving through parliament.

Locatelli said the chamber was expected to take the final steps this week, after which the bill would go to the Senate.

The proposal focuses first on family members who live with the person they care for and provide extensive support, including around-the-clock care.

It would provide financial help and offer support such as psychological services, respite care, help balancing care with work, and recognition of training credits.

It would also provide different forms of support for people with lighter caregiving duties.

Locatelli said she hopes future measures could include early retirement and pension contribution credits for family caregivers.
