De Luca forms parliamentary group component after deal with Meloni

Cateno De Luca, the mayor of Taormina in Sicily, says his party Sud chiama Nord has reached an agreement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, for national elections.

The party has formed a component within the Chamber of Deputies’ Mixed Group, with the help of two deputies from Brothers of Italy.

De Luca says the procedures are complete, though the Chamber president has yet to make a formal announcement.

Under the new election law, parties outside Parliament must collect 6,000 signatures in each electoral constituency to field a list.

De Luca says having a component in the Mixed Group will mean his party needs to collect between 750 and 1,500 signatures instead.

The arrangement could also give Sud chiama Nord a chance to win seats through a rule for coalition lists that fall short of the 3% threshold, potentially affecting Noi Moderati.

De Luca says the agreement applies to national elections only, and that his party will run alone in Sicily’s regional contest.
