Argentine banks turn back to government debt as lending stalls
Banks in Argentina are earning more from government debt than from loans to businesses and households.
In July, government securities made up about 56% of their operating income, while net interest from private loans made up 17%.
High interest rates, weaker demand and rising missed payments have slowed lending.
This matters because banks are lending less to the private sector while the government relies on them to fund its debt.
