US Army backs pilot to recover gallium from gold mine waste

Gallium is used in military radar, communications equipment and other electronics.

The US has not produced it domestically since before 1987 and relies on foreign supplies.

A Nevada company will test equipment to recover gallium from sources including gold mine waste.

The pilot will show whether the process works outside the lab and could support future production.
