South Africa deputy police chief resigns after sexual-offence charges
South Africa’s deputy police chief, Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned.
He was charged with sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl, raping an 18-year-old woman and trafficking.
Sibiya denies the charges, though he says he had sex with the 18-year-old and that it was consensual.
He has been in custody since his arrest three weeks ago, after a court denied his bail application.
Police say his departure is being treated as a dishonourable discharge.
His resignation comes as a public inquiry examines allegations of corruption and links between police and criminals.
At the inquiry, Sibiya denied an allegation that he received 20 impalas from an alleged criminal kingpin in exchange for a police contract.
