IMF cuts Brazil growth forecasts but raises global outlook

The International Monetary Fund has lowered its forecasts for Brazil’s economic growth in 2026 and 2027.

It now expects Brazil’s economy to grow 2.2% in 2026 and 1.9% in 2027, down from earlier estimates of 2.4% and 2.2%.

The IMF says restrictive monetary conditions, reduced government support and global uncertainty are weighing on growth.

At the same time, it raised its forecast for global growth in 2026 to 3.1%, while leaving its 2027 estimate at 3.4%.

The Fund says the global economy has remained resilient despite shocks including the pandemic, wars and changes in trade.

It also points to risks from falling energy stocks and high public debt, which can leave countries vulnerable to price shocks and higher borrowing costs.

The IMF says governments need firm measures to rebuild their ability to withstand future shocks.

The combination of higher financing costs with elevated debt levels exposes a vulnerability. Firm and deliberate measures are needed to rebuild these buffers and strengthen the capacity to withstand future shocks—whether new or recurring.
