IMF raises 2026 global growth forecast as Asian AI exports support activity

The International Monetary Fund now expects the global economy to grow by 3.1% in 2026, up from its earlier forecast of 3.0%.

It says strong exports linked to artificial intelligence are helping cushion the economic impact of the war in Iran.

South Korea and Taiwan make advanced semiconductors, while Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand also supply goods used in AI investment.

The IMF expects these exports to support manufacturing in other Asian countries and some commodity exporters.

It left its 2027 growth forecast at 3.4%, but warned that risks are tilted downward.

A prolonged or worsening conflict in the Middle East could keep energy and food prices high, increase inflation and weigh on growth.

The IMF raised its 2027 global inflation forecast to 4.1%, while leaving its 2026 forecast at 4.7%.

These projections were released during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok.
