Modi and Vijay share metro ride as Centre announces ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai and announced infrastructure projects worth ₹13,000 crore for Tamil Nadu, covering metro, roads, railways and ports.

He rode a driverless metro with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, travelling between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass.

The meeting came less than a day after Vijay hosted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi at his home.

Vijay’s party, TVK, is partnered with Congress, while he also needs to work with the BJP-led central government.

He asked for approval of a river-linking project, Tamil to be made an official language of the Madras High Court, and the release of ₹5,110 crore in pending education funds.

Modi said the announced projects would support the state’s growth and create jobs.

Vijay called for closer coordination between the central and state governments, while setting a goal of making Tamil Nadu a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036.
