Opposition leaders march to Supreme Court over electoral roll revision
Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders marched in Delhi towards the Supreme Court on Monday over concerns about India’s electoral system.
They were protesting the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls, which they say has disenfranchised millions; the Election Commission and the BJP deny manipulation.
The march followed Chief Justice Surya Kant’s refusal to meet opposition leaders, saying related cases were already before the court.
The opposition filed a petition and sought action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, including his resignation.
A video from the march prompted BJP criticism after it appeared to show Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar being pulled back beside Gandhi.
Shivakumar said Gandhi did not push him and was concerned about the large crowd; Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said Shivakumar was slightly pushed amid crowd-control efforts.
The Supreme Court is being asked to consider the opposition’s petition, but the reports do not say when it will be heard.
