US envoy returns after Nicaragua rejects ambassador nominee

The acting US envoy to Nicaragua has returned to Washington for what the State Department called critical consultations.

The move followed Nicaragua’s rejection of US ambassador nominee Natasha Franceschi.

Nicaragua’s co-presidents, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, made the decision, according to the US State Department.

The department criticized the rejection, while Nicaragua’s presidency had not immediately commented.

Ortega has accused the United States of trying to interfere in Nicaragua’s affairs.

The dispute adds to tensions between the two governments amid Nicaragua’s political crisis, which has continued since April 2018.

The US has also previously raised concerns about foreign security cooperation with Nicaragua, and Baumann’s next steps were not stated.
