Simon and Rachel storms leave at least five dead in Mexico

Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel brought heavy rain and flooding to Mexico’s Pacific coast.

At least five people died: one man in Jalisco and four members of a family, including two children, near Ensenada in Baja California.

Five people were still missing, while rescue teams used helicopters to help rescue 32 people who had been cut off.

Simon weakened and moved away from the coast without making landfall, but officials remained alert for more heavy rain and waves as high as five metres.

The US hurricane agency forecast that Simon would make landfall in Sinaloa on Wednesday.

Flooding and landslides also affected communities in Jalisco, Guerrero, Michoacán and Colima.

The storms matter because coastal communities faced deaths, displacement and damage, while businesses in Puerto Vallarta were still closed and its airport remained shut.
