Yemeni forces report gains near the Bab al-Mandeb strait

On October 5, Yemeni government troops and groups linked to the former Southern Transitional Council began an offensive against the Houthis near the Bab al-Mandeb strait.

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, control parts of Yemen, including coastline captured in September.

The Southern Giants Brigades lead the pro-government force in the latest fighting.

The group has roots in the southern separatist movement, whose supporters include people who want independence for southern Yemen.

By Monday afternoon, the force said it had cut the main road connecting the Red Sea port city of Mocha with the Bab al-Mandeb.

The strait is important for energy supplies, and the reported advance is one of the anti-Houthi forces’ first major gains in years.

The alliance brings together groups with different political aims, following a January conflict in which government forces defeated the STC.

Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council chairman has announced a wider offensive, but the available information does not say what will happen next.
