Tajani seeks more flexibility for Italy’s budget amid inflation

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani wants more room to spend in the next budget as inflation rises.

He made the case at a business forum in Rome, saying the government has already secured flexibility on energy and security measures.

The government is pressing the EU for further flexibility, which Tajani says could support growth and competitiveness.

He argues that inflation is driven by external factors and says raising interest rates would make borrowing harder for businesses and households.

His Forza Italia party is considering tax cuts and other support, including lower income tax for people earning up to €60,000 and tax relief for young people, but has not set out costs.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is due to raise the issue at an EU Council meeting, while Tajani says he will discuss it with European People’s Party leaders.

The proposals are still being developed, and Tajani says more budget flexibility could allow the government to do more.
