Early statin use linked to lower dementia risk in people with type 2 diabetes

Early statin use linked to lower dementia risk in people with type 2 diabetes

Researchers followed more than 130,000 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019.

They compared people who took no statin with people prescribed one soon after diagnosis or later on.

Those prescribed a statin early were 15% less likely to develop dementia over the 10-year period studied than those who took none.

Statins are medicines commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol and protect heart health.

The researchers found a stronger link with vascular dementia, which is associated with problems in blood flow to the brain, than with Alzheimer’s disease.

The findings point to a possible connection between heart and metabolic health and dementia risk, but they do not show that statins prevent dementia.

What people are saying

Identifying ways to reduce dementia risk, including through medications we already use to protect heart health, could have meaningful benefits for patients and their families.
