Ex Ilva workers strike over planned plant shutdowns
Workers at Italy’s former Ilva steel company began a 24-hour strike on October 12.
The action involves plants across Italy, including sites in Taranto, Genoa and Novi Ligure.
The company, Acciaieria d’Italia, is under extraordinary administration.
It has suspended production in the hot area of its Taranto plant and announced temporary shutdowns in Genoa and Novi Ligure from November 15.
Workers and unions oppose the stoppages, and unions have not ruled out extending the strike.
At a gathering in Genoa, Mayor Silvia Salis and regional president Marco Bucci backed keeping the plant open.
They said its steel products are in demand and warned that stopping production could mean importing them from abroad.

There is no industrial reason to treat the plants in the North this way when the market needs their products: an agreement on international markets for the supply of raw materials would be enough and the problem would not exist.
Today is an important day because we want a very clear message to come from Genoa: we do not want the factory to close, we want it to keep operating because it makes a product that is in high demand and that we would otherwise import from abroad.
