Young candidates top vote counts, but half of Brazil’s lower house is 49 or older
Young candidates won many of the biggest vote totals in Brazil’s 2026 elections for the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress.
Nine of the 10 most-voted candidates are under 40, and they include figures from both the left and the right who have built public profiles partly through social media.
Nikolas Ferreira, 30, received 3 million votes, while Erika Hilton, 33, was the most-voted woman for the chamber, with about 1.6 million.
But high vote totals for young candidates did not make the chamber much younger overall: its median age is 49, unchanged from 2022.
Only 23 of the 513 elected deputies are under 30, and 17 of them are from right-wing parties.
The median age in state legislatures also stayed steady at 47, while the Senate’s fell from 58 to 56.
The Senate’s age comparison comes as two-thirds of its seats were renewed in 2026, compared with one-third in 2022.

Only 23 elected deputies, or 4.5% of the chamber, are under 30.
