Saudi industrial output falls 23.5% as non-oil activity grows
Saudi Arabia’s overall industrial production fell 23.5% in August compared with a year earlier.
The decline was driven mainly by mining and quarrying, where output fell 35.8%.
Oil activity dropped 33.6%, while non-oil industrial activity grew 1.2%.
Manufacturing output fell 8.8%, but electricity and related supply activity and water and waste services increased.
The figures come as conflict between the United States and Iran disrupts oil production and shipping across the Middle East, according to the report.
The industrial production index tracks output across mining, manufacturing, utilities, water and waste services, and the figures do not give a forecast for what happens next.
Saudi Arabia’s Industrial Production Index fell 23.5 percent year on year in August, to 87.1.
Mining and quarrying output contracted by 35.8 percent year on year, driving much of the decline.
Non-oil industrial activities grew 1.2 percent year on year, despite the overall contraction.
Manufacturing output decreased 8.8 percent year on year, including a 24.1 percent decline in coke and refined petroleum products.
The report linked disruption to oil production and shipping from the US-Iran conflict to restrictions on key regional export routes.
