Brazilian malaria vaccine approved for first human trials

Vivaxin is a vaccine designed to target P. vivax, a parasite that causes malaria.

Its first human trial will test three doses in 48 healthy adults and check safety and immune responses.

This early study will not show whether the vaccine prevents malaria; more trials will be needed.

The vaccine targets a parasite species different from those targeted by the two malaria vaccines recommended by the WHO.
