Five people held after man is found mutilated in Calais

A 50-year-old man was found mutilated in an apartment in Calais, northern France, on Monday night.

His tongue, a toe and his genitals had been cut, and he was taken to hospital.

Five people, including a 13-year-old girl, were in police custody on Tuesday in connection with suspected torture and acts of barbarity.

The people held include the apartment’s tenant, a suspected perpetrator and possible accomplices.

The man’s life was not in danger, according to the prosecutor’s office in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The case matters because investigators are examining a serious suspected violent crime involving a vulnerable victim.

The investigation was continuing on Tuesday, with the five people still in custody.
