Russia arrests Japanese journalist on suspicion of spying in Sakhalin

Russia says it arrested a Japanese journalist in the Sakhalin region on suspicion of spying.

The man worked for Japan’s Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, but Russian officials have not named him.

Russia’s Federal Security Service alleges he gathered information about the country’s defense capabilities for a Japanese intelligence agency.

It says he was preparing to leave Russia when arrested, then was flown to Moscow and placed in custody.

The case comes amid rising tensions between Russia and Japan, after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril Islands in August.

The Pacific islands are controlled by Moscow and claimed by both countries.

The sources do not say what happens next in the case.
