Brazil’s PGR opposes removing federal police chief from office
Brazil’s prosecutor-general’s office opposes suspending federal police chief Andrei Rodrigues and has sent its position to the Supreme Court.
It says there are no concrete grounds to keep the suspension in place, which was ordered by Justice André Mendonça.
The dispute began after a police report about messages involving Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes was made public in a case concerning Banco Master.
The report’s messages indicated that the bank’s owner had asked Moraes to intervene with Rodrigues and the prosecutor-general over the investigation.
The prosecutor’s office says the material showed no evidence of personal surveillance of Mendonça and argues that the political party that sought Rodrigues’s removal lacks standing in the case.
Court president Edson Fachin has suspended the competing rulings, leaving Rodrigues in charge until the Supreme Court reviews the matter.
