Hurricane Simón strengthens to Category 3 near Mexico’s Pacific coast

Hurricane Simón strengthened to Category 3 as it moved toward Mexico’s Pacific coast.

It was expected to approach the states of Jalisco and Colima, with a possible impact on Sunday.

Forecasts called for heavy to torrential rain in Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit, along with strong winds and high waves in coastal areas.

The rain could cause landslides, rising rivers and streams, and flooding in low-lying places.

President Claudia Sheinbaum urged people to follow official updates, shelter, and evacuate to temporary shelters if they live in vulnerable areas.

Emergency plans were active, and response teams from several government agencies were prepared.

Authorities said Simón could strengthen further to Category 4 as it approached the coast.
