Iran says supertanker hit a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said a supertanker hit a sea mine while trying to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

The Guards said the ship had capacity for about 2 million barrels of oil and that the impact caused an explosion.

Iran said the tanker had switched off its navigation systems.

The strait is a key route for shipping, and Iran says it closed the waterway on July 12 after the United States resumed attacks on July 8.

Tehran has threatened to target ships that use routes it has not approved.

The Guards also said three oil tankers had hit sea mines since the previous day.

The statements did not say what would happen next to the tanker.
