Breast cancer survivor meets researcher whose work helped her treatment
Sylvie Dax, 46, travelled from Gap to Paris to meet Capucine Grandjean, a researcher at the Institut Pasteur.
Dax had an aggressive breast cancer and is now in remission.
During two years of treatment, she had 28 chemotherapy sessions, two operations and breast reconstruction.
She credits immunotherapy with helping her recover; Grandjean specialises in this type of treatment, which uses the immune system to fight cancer.
Immunotherapy has been used since 2011 and helps treat thousands of people with cancer in France each year, sometimes extending lives or leading to recovery.
The meeting showed how research can affect patients’ lives, while giving researchers a rare chance to meet someone in remission.
Donations provide more than a third of the Institut Pasteur’s budget and help support its research.
