Senate may vote Wednesday on bill to end Brazil’s six-day work schedule
Brazil’s Senate may vote Wednesday on a bill to end the six-on, one-off work schedule.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre said the proposal has enough signatures to consider a special timetable that would allow both votes on the same day.
The proposal would set five workdays and two rest days per week, and reduce the maximum working week from 44 hours to 40.
The bill passed the lower house in May but had been stalled in the Senate for months.
A constitutional amendment needs 49 votes in favour in each of two rounds to pass the Senate.
Normally, three discussion sessions must take place between the rounds, but the special timetable could remove that interval.
The government plans to submit the timetable request Wednesday, and Alcolumbre said he would put it to a vote in the afternoon.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre said the proposal to end Brazil’s six-day work schedule has enough support to consider an accelerated voting calendar.
The Senate could vote on the proposal in two rounds on Wednesday, October 14, if senators approve the special calendar.
The proposed constitutional amendment would set a five-day workweek with two days off and reduce the standard weekly limit from 44 to 40 hours.
At least 49 of the Senate’s 81 members must support the amendment in each round for it to pass.
Exame gives conflicting dates for the first-round vote, saying both Wednesday, October 14 and Wednesday, October 13.
