Royal dispute leaves Negeri Sembilan’s leadership in question

Negeri Sembilan, a state in Malaysia, is facing a dispute over who has the right to rule it.

The two men at the centre of the dispute are incumbent ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar, his intended replacement.

On April 19, the state’s four territorial chiefs, known as undangs, issued a joint proclamation declaring Muhriz removed and naming Nadzaruddin as his immediate replacement.

The chiefs cited allegations of misconduct against Muhriz.

The months-long dispute has led to the fall of the state government, but it remains unclear who is in charge.

Observers warn that the crisis could affect Malaysia beyond Negeri Sembilan by testing how the country’s monarchy and government work.

The dispute is unresolved.
