Dutch ice rinks open in October despite warm weather
Many ice rinks in the Netherlands opened in early October, even though it was around 20°C outside.
Making ice in warmer weather uses more energy, and strong autumn winds can also make it harder to produce good ice.
Some rink managers say opening later could save energy, but the competition calendar makes that difficult.
Rinks and skating groups are also working on ways to make ice skating more sustainable.
