Team GB surplus Olympic kit to be resold to reduce clothing waste
Unused Team GB clothing from recent Olympic events is being stored in a warehouse on England’s south coast.
A new partnership will resell 700 items from Paris 2024 through a specialist platform, and the proceeds will support the Team GB Foundation, the charity arm of the British Olympic Association.
Sports organisations often order kit before they know which athletes will compete, leaving them with extra stock.
Performance needs and sponsorship contracts can also make it difficult to reduce orders or pass clothing on.
A sustainability consultancy estimates that up to 100,000 items of sports kit go to UK landfill each year, though the total surplus is hard to measure.
Reselling the clothing gives usable kit another life, while offering sports fans and participants a way to buy it without purchasing new.
