Musk calls for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to leave Canada
Elon Musk posted on X that Quebec should separate from Canada, then said Alberta and Saskatchewan should do the same.
His comments followed a post about Quebec independence by Parti Québécois premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan rejected Musk’s calls, as did Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
Canadian tech journalist Paris Marx said Musk may have been reacting impulsively, while historian Quinn Slobodian suggested Musk can have more than one motive.
Marx also said Musk may see separatist movements as a chance to weaken the Canadian government’s legitimacy.
The story does not establish that Musk’s posts were part of a planned effort.
