King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince William to visit Aberfan on anniversary
King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince William will visit Aberfan in South Wales on 21 October, the 60th anniversary of a mining disaster.
In 1966, a colliery waste tip collapsed and sent coal slurry into Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes.
The disaster killed 116 children and 28 adults.
The royals will pay tribute at Aberfan Memorial Garden, built on the site of the school, and meet survivors and members of the community.
They will also visit the local community centre, where they are due to meet people affected by the disaster and see an exhibition about the rescue effort.
Prince William will unveil a memorial tree at a nearby primary school that continues Pantglas Junior School’s legacy.
Queen Elizabeth II did not visit Aberfan until eight days after the disaster, a delay she later regarded as a major regret.
