US Navy maintenance firms to visit South Korean shipyards this month
US naval maintenance firms will visit South Korean shipyards in Busan on Oct.
29 as part of a two-day maintenance and support forum.
The event, organized by a South Korean shipbuilding industry group, is expected to bring together about 100 people from both countries.
The visitors will assess South Korea’s ability to repair and maintain US warships, while South Korean companies will hear more about US requirements.
Major South Korean shipbuilders and equipment suppliers are expected to take part.
South Korean firms have won about eight US warship maintenance contracts since the two countries announced the MASGA initiative early last year, working with repair companies in the Busan and South Gyeongsang region.
But US law limits the work that can be done at foreign shipyards, so most US naval maintenance remains with domestic companies.
Expanding cooperation may require changes to those rules, and the forum is intended to support closer collaboration.
