Moyes says he was surprised by Everton sale announcement

Everton manager David Moyes said he was surprised to learn that the club’s owners are open to new investment, including a possible sale of a controlling stake.

The American-owned Friedkin Group completed its takeover in December 2024, after previous efforts to sell Everton fell through.

Moyes said he learned the news on Friday, when it was announced publicly.

He had expected the owners to stay much longer and said the recent transfer window had given him some indication that their plans might have changed.

Moyes returned to Everton in early 2025 hoping to help the club challenge for European places more often.

He said he feels most sorry for supporters, who have faced repeated uncertainty and difficult periods, including points deductions and relegation concerns.

Moyes said he and the players will focus on winning matches while the club’s ownership situation develops.
