Painting one turbine blade black cut bird deaths by nearly 74% in a study

Fast-moving turbine blades can be hard for birds to see.

In a Spanish study, researchers found nearly 74% fewer annual bird deaths at turbines with one black blade than at unpainted ones.

Other studies found similar drops, though a Dutch study found no significant change.

Painting blades could help protect birds as wind power expands, but more testing is needed.
