John Wayne turned down a role in 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles

Mel Brooks wanted Western star John Wayne to play the Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles.

Wayne said he laughed at the script but could not take the role because its humor was too dirty.

Gene Wilder played the part instead.

The film used comedy to take aim at racism and Hollywood stereotypes.
