Italian tax professional says Vienna offered better pay and working conditions

Alessandro Roncarati is a 46-year-old Italian tax professional who grew up in Ferrara and studied economics and law in Bologna.

After working in Milan, he moved to Vienna in September 2012 to study tax law.

He says he had earned €1,300 a month as a self-employed worker in Italy, later rising to €1,800, with €500 deducted to repay money advanced by his firm.

In Vienna, his first part-time job paid €1,200 gross for 20 hours a week, and he was an employee whose contributions were paid directly.

His studies and early career in Austria were still financially difficult, and he relied on small jobs, loans and help from his parents.

He later worked in research and international tax, and now works for a German multinational that makes technology for the energy sector.

He says his life in Vienna offers better pay and a balance he is afraid of losing.
