China’s autumn grain harvest passes halfway mark
China’s autumn grain harvest was more than halfway complete as of October 10.
Harvesting was further along in the southwest and Huang-Huai-Hai regions than in the northeast.
Farmers were also beginning to sow winter wheat and rapeseed.
The government is promoting higher-yield crop varieties and farming methods, including denser planting and drip irrigation.
In parts of Shandong and Henan, these approaches are being used to raise corn yields.
New machinery is also being used, including tractors designed for hills and a hybrid tractor in Xinjiang that uses less fuel than traditional diesel machinery.
The Agriculture Ministry has sent teams to 12 key provinces to advise on harvesting, planting and field management.
