South Korea’s KOSPI falls more than 6% below 6,000 in trading

South Korea’s KOSPI stock index fell sharply on Oct.

13, dropping below 6,000 during trading.

At 10:57 a.m.

local time, it was down 6.73% at 5,954.30, and the KOSDAQ was down 4.83%.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two major chip companies, fell about 7% and 9%, respectively.

Foreign investors had been net sellers of KOSPI shares for six straight trading days, while individual and institutional investors were buying.

The declines came as semiconductor shares weakened in the United States and investors reacted to news of progress in China’s memory-chip technology.

South Korea’s market temporarily halted some program selling, a measure used during sharp falls.

Analysts said a key question is whether local demand for shares can offset continued foreign selling.
