Singapore to use available AI models in new cybersecurity strategy
Singapore has launched its third national cybersecurity strategy, setting out plans for stronger cyber defence.
Senior Minister K Shanmugam said the country will assess available AI models and adapt the best ones for its needs, rather than build its own for every use.
The strategy includes securely connecting those models with the tools and information used by cyber defenders.
It also calls for Singapore to find and address weaknesses earlier, and to monitor for threats continuously instead of mainly reacting after an incident.
The plan covers critical infrastructure, AI and quantum capabilities, international partnerships, and the cybersecurity workforce.
Shanmugam said AI can help attackers act faster and on a larger scale, making stronger defences and recovery plans important.
The strategy aims for government and industry to work together at a national scale.
Singapore will evaluate and adapt available artificial intelligence models for cyber defence rather than develop its own for every use case.
Senior Minister K Shanmugam announced the approach while launching the country’s third cybersecurity strategy on Oct 13.
The strategy calls for more proactive national cyber defence, including earlier threat detection and action at national scale.
It also covers critical infrastructure, AI and quantum capabilities, global partnerships, and Singapore’s cybersecurity ecosystem and workforce.
Shanmugam said AI-enabled threats can operate with greater speed, scale and sophistication.

What people are saying
What we really need is the capability to evaluate the best available models and to adapt them to our own needs.
We cannot resist AI adoption. But we need to try and adopt it in a safe and secure manner.
AI allows actors to operate with greater speed, greater scale and greater sophistication.
There will be more incidents, more attacks. All of us have to shore up our cyber defences and our resilience to recover when attacks happen.
