Police to increase surveillance on deadly road near Kochi airport

Police in Ernakulam district will increase surveillance on the national highway stretch near Kochi airport.

The move follows a collision between a car and a two-wheeler on Sunday, October 11, that killed three youths.

Police say eight bike riders have died on the stretch in the past five months.

The road includes Athani Junction and Airport Junction and is wide and well lit.

Police and residents say young people have used it for speeding and filming videos late at night.

Officers plan to strengthen patrols, examine camera footage and take action against riders found speeding; they also aim to curb driving under the influence.

Police say stricter surveillance has reduced racing and stunts on some other roads in the area.

What people are saying

Patrol will be strengthened along the stretch, and footage from surveillance cameras will be examined thoroughly. Bikes that were found overspeeding in the past will also be identified, and action will be taken against erring riders.
