Renault warns it may cut European output by 300,000 cars over emissions rules

Renault chief executive François Provost says the company may cut production by 300,000 vehicles if the European Union does not ease its emissions rules.

He made the warning at the Paris Motor Show, saying he could propose cutting models and output within a year.

The EU target requires new cars sold in 2030 to emit 55% less carbon dioxide than in 2021, and new vans to emit 50% less.

Renault is also facing growing competition from Chinese carmakers, whose market share has risen from 4% to 13%, according to Provost.

He called for limits on imported vehicles that do not contribute to European industry, jobs or supply chains.

France and Germany are working on an agreement for more flexibility on emissions limits, including allowing some combustion-engine models to continue.

The EU and China have also reached a preliminary understanding on limiting Chinese hybrid vehicle exports, which could reduce them by more than half.

I am concerned because if we do not get the 2030 moratorium, within a year I will have to propose to a board of directors that we eliminate cars and cut production.
