Studio leaders discuss workplace culture and training at Turin conference

Studio executives discussed leadership and workplace culture at the View Conference in Turin, Italy.

Sony Pictures Imageworks president Michelle Grady and ILM senior vice president Janet Lewin were among the speakers.

Grady said what leaders tolerate helps shape a studio’s culture, while Lewin said companies must model the values they expect from managers.

The panel also addressed younger employees’ desire to have a voice, including through employee forums, town halls and open-door policies at ILM.

Lewin said ILM coaches and mentors managers, and steps in when they struggle.

She described the 2023 closure of ILM’s Singapore studio, a business decision she said was not about the staff’s work; around 60% of its talent moved to other ILM locations.

The companies are also building formal leadership pathways: ILM has a six-month mentorship initiative, and Imageworks’ program is oversubscribed each year.
