Vinny Mauri finishes 10th at Chicago Marathon after leading early
Vinny Mauri, a 25-year-old runner from Warren, Ohio, finished 10th at the Chicago Marathon in 2:06:45.
He was the third American, behind Clayton Young and Charles Hicks, who finished seventh and eighth.
Mauri was on American record pace for the first 18 miles, but hamstring cramps forced him to stop and stretch several times.
He had run 2:05:54 at the Glass City Marathon in April, making Chicago his second marathon.
Mauri trained mostly on Planet Fitness treadmills and used a schedule built around two hard training days each week; he does not have a coach.
His Chicago performance showed that his earlier fast result was no fluke, although he did not meet his high hopes for the race.
If he stays healthy and manages late-race cramps, he could contend at the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
After the race, Mauri said he was happy with his effort and planned to take his next race a little more seriously.
