Amos Kipruto wins Chicago Marathon in personal-best 2:01:09

Amos Kipruto of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon in 2:01:09, setting a personal best.

The 34-year-old pulled away over the final 10 kilometers after defending champion Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda pushed the pace but faded to fourth.

Kipruto had finished second in Chicago the previous year, after starting fast and slowing in the second half.

This time, he kept a more even pace and finished strongly.

Ethiopia’s Tadese Bikila and Milkesa Mengesha placed second and third.

Clayton Young was the top American, finishing seventh in 2:05:23 despite racing with a torn hamstring.

Vinny Mauri, who had been on pace to challenge the American record, stopped several times late in the race to stretch his hamstring and finished tenth.
