Rubio offers condolences over Okinawa woman’s killing, pledges US cooperation

A 39-year-old woman was found murdered at a hotel in Naha, on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

A US Marine stationed on the island has been arrested on suspicion of killing her and stealing her wallet.

He denies the allegations, according to local media reports.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered condolences to Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and said the United States would cooperate with Japanese authorities.

The killing has stirred anger in Japan, where crimes involving US forces have long strained relations and fuelled criticism of the US military presence.

About 54,000 US military personnel are stationed in Japan, mostly on Okinawa.

The US military began a 30-day curfew on Oct.

9, requiring troops to be in assigned quarters or off-base housing from midnight to 5 a.m.

The investigation is continuing, with the United States pledging to work with Japan and local authorities.
