Justice Ministry asks federal police to investigate threats against Ana Elisa

Brazil’s Justice Ministry has asked the Federal Police to investigate online death and rape threats against Ana Elisa, a newly elected congresswoman from Minas Gerais.

The ministry says the threats are linked to her political views and work in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election campaign.

Ana Elisa said she received threats as often as every two minutes and took her account on X offline.

She has also said the attacks included the publication of personal information.

Justice officials want police to open an investigation and ask X and Meta to moderate the content and help identify those responsible.

The ministry says the case may fall under federal authority because the alleged crimes were committed online and include misogynistic content.

The police investigation and any action by the platforms have not been confirmed.
