Siberian health alert ends, but questions remain over researcher’s death

A health alert in Irkutsk, a Siberian city near Mongolia, followed the October 2 death of a 28-year-old researcher at a plague-control institute.

Russia’s public health agency said she died of pneumonia of undetermined cause, and the regional governor said the quarantine was lifted on October 8.

He also said more than 5,000 tests found no health problems linked to infectious diseases.

The World Health Organization has asked Russian authorities to explain what caused the researcher’s death.

Officials have not publicly explained why some mentioned plague or why hundreds of people were placed under observation.

A local journalist said animal-transmitted infection was one possible concern, but authorities have not confirmed this.

Residents appeared calm, although some hospitals continued to restrict visits; the governor said the crisis was over, while the journalist said authorities had not declared the alert over.
