Saudi railway orders 10 more Intercity trains from Stadler
Saudi Arabia’s railway, SAR, has ordered 10 more Intercity trains from Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail.
The order is worth more than 300 million Swiss francs and uses an option in a contract signed two years ago.
It brings the planned fleet of trains designed for Saudi Arabia to 20.
The trains are built to handle extreme heat and sand, with protective filters and backup systems.
They can carry about 320 passengers and are planned for the east-west route linking Riyadh, Hofuf, Abqaiq and Dammam.
Most of the new trains will be made in Switzerland, while their powered-car bodies will come from Stadler’s plant in Valencia, Spain.
Production is due to follow the first batch, and passenger services are expected to begin in the second half of 2029.
