Indonesia plans to turn Bantar Gebang waste into electricity

Indonesia plans to tackle its most urgent waste problems by processing rubbish instead of leaving it in open piles.

Food Affairs Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan says there are about 24 to 30 such sites, including Bantar Gebang in Bekasi.

The government aims to clear half of these sites by 2027 and the rest by 2028.

At Bantar Gebang, the plan is to process 1,500 tonnes of waste each day into electricity.

The minister says the site could produce enough power for 100,000 homes a year.

He also says the project could create thousands of jobs and attract about Rp 3 trillion in investment at one site.

The wider goal is to resolve Indonesia’s waste problem by 2029.
