Nearly 59% of English adults with high blood pressure were unaware, study finds

Researchers analyzed health data from 1.4 million adults in England to assess high blood pressure.

They found that 37% met the study’s criteria for the condition, and nearly 59% of those people did not know they had it.

The study defined high blood pressure as a reading of at least 140 over 90, or reported use of prescription blood pressure medicine.

High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, so people may feel well even as it causes damage over time.

The study also found that just over half of participants with high blood pressure who were taking medication still had readings that were not under control.

The condition became more common with age, especially among men with higher body mass indexes.

Regular checkups and correctly used home monitors can help identify high blood pressure, but the study does not describe any next steps for participants.
