U.S. Army receives first Hanwha-made mobile howitzer

The U.S. Army has received its first Mobile Tactical Cannon, a mobile 155 mm artillery system made by Hanwha Defense USA, a U.S. subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace.

The system was displayed at an Army event in Washington earlier this month.

The Army plans to test it and gather feedback from soldiers.

The program is intended to replace the Army’s aging M777 towed howitzers, which have been in service since 2005.

The new system is based on a wheeled version of Hanwha’s K9 Thunder artillery system, used by South Korea’s military since 1999 and exported to several countries.

The Army plans to deploy the new artillery first to Stryker brigade combat teams.

Hanwha’s contract calls for six prototypes, with an option for 12 more, and is worth up to $262.9 million.
